The Dan Peters Designs website has officially moved. DPD is now running from our own Amadi web infrastructure, with the live site hosted on Amadi Web and a second Amadi server standing by with a complete synchronized copy. That sounds…
A few weeks ago, I wrote about an idea I had been working toward: what if locally owned servers could become useful community infrastructure? That idea started with A Community Cloud Built From Local Racks, where I sketched out what…
A real-hardware test of MT Server’s guided setup now reaches Step 5 of 5 — Installation. Here’s what the installer can do today and what we’re improving next.
MT Server's guided offline setup has now completed a full deployment, reboot, storage-persistence and zero-change convergence proof.
One of the ideas growing out of the MT Server work is a larger one: what happens when locally owned servers stop being isolated boxes and start becoming neighborhood infrastructure? I have been sketching a possible community-cloud model built from…
MT Server has officially moved into alpha testing. This does not mean the system is ready for general public installation yet. It means the core architecture, installer work, and automated validation have reached the point where the next job is…
China’s push into quantum computing took a major step forward with the release of “Origin Pilot,” a quantum operating system developed by Origin Quantum. While headlines often describe it as a “quantum computer,” Origin Pilot is actually software designed to…
The Hardened Node: A Phased Defense for Independent Computing The Philosophy of the Independent Node In the modern web landscape, every public-facing server is under constant, automated surveillance. For those of us building an independent lab on salvaged hardware, the…
There is a specific, quiet magic that happens about 24 hours after you’ve successfully migrated your digital life to your own hardware. It’s the “Clean Slate” effect. For the first time in years, you aren’t waking up to a notification…
You don’t need a $2,000 server rack to fire the data monsters. In fact, for the independent builder, the best hardware isn’t found in a glossy catalog—it’s found in the “legacy” piles of enterprise graveyards. To start your journey into…
This is a deep dive into the global shift. We are witnessing the first real cracks in the “Big Data” empire. In 2026, the wind has shifted: between skyrocketing energy costs, the environmental toll of massive data centers, and new…
When we talk about “Independent Computing,” it’s easy to get lost in the wires and the code. But at the end of the day, your computer system is just a tool meant to serve a human purpose. Most of us…
Congratulations. You’ve moved past the “corporate cloud” and onto your own hardware. Whether you’re running on a reclaimed Dell or a dedicated server, your first login to Nextcloud is the moment you stop being a “user” and start being an…
There’s a specific kind of quiet that comes with a Saturday morning project. In most homes, that quiet is constantly interrupted: a notification that your cloud storage is full, or a software update that moves every button you just learned…
In a consumer culture built on “Planned Obsolescence,” the most radical educational act is a repair. For a STEM student, a broken device isn’t garbage; it’s a high-stakes puzzle that demands a multidisciplinary approach to solve. When we look at…
In the modern educational landscape, the “T” in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) has largely been reduced to “Consumption.” Students are taught to use tools—Tableau for data, AWS for hosting, Google Workspace for collaboration—but they are rarely taught to…
The common thread running through Dan Peters Designs—from the first 1/24 scale resin part in 1988 to the current server migration—is a refusal to accept “disposable” as a standard. Whether it was a 100-year-old letterpress, a 1980s Jeep, or a…
Building on the [Outfitter Era] logistics, NCO became the testing ground for real-world river management. Long before the modern cloud was a utility, Dan Peters Designs was solving high-stakes logistical problems with salvaged hardware and infrared data. This was the…
We’ve all been there: a laptop from 2018 starts to crawl, the battery dies in twenty minutes, and the manufacturer tells you it’s “vintage” (tech-speak for “buy a new one”). But for a homeschooling family or a small cottage business,…
